The Tragedy Of An Epic Hero In Beowulf

Great Essays
All of the three books that Ms. Emperors class read were about epic heroes. One story in Edith Hamilton’s Mythology was about Hercules, who was an epic hero who lived in ancient Greece. Beowulf by M.A. Roberts was about a man who was very arrogant and fought many scary creatures. In Dante Alighieri Dante’s Inferno, the main character was actually the author traveling through hell. An epic hero is someone who has a flaw, resurrection, and a restitution and influences the story and society. Every epic hero’s flaw is hubris. The epic hero must realize his flaw to have a resurrection, and correct his flaw in order to get a restitution. Hercules, Beowulf, and Dante are all epic heroes because they have a flaw, resurrection, and a restitution. …show more content…
When being questioned by Unferth, nobody has any idea whether or not Beowulf is telling the truth when talking about his swimming competition with Brecca. “And so it was that I killed nine water-monsters with my sword. I never heard of a battle more hard-fought by night beneath heaven’s roof, nor of a man more desolate while adrift in the deep!” (Roberts 29). The arrogance in this story is very apparent, Beowulf basically says that he would have won the swimming competition if he had not fought off monsters in the middle of it. When Beowulf is in Heorot, he thinks that he can lure Grendel into the hall and fight him without armor or a sword and not lose any men in the process. However, his arrogance gets the best of him and he loses one of his men to Grendel while everyone else was sleeping. Beowulf’s low point is when he becomes king, he does not want to become king but has to when Headred gets slain in …show more content…
He realizes that if one of his friends could end up in Hell, then he could too. Realizing this, he breaks down and decides he needs to shape up in order to make it to heaven. “O my Conductor, his own violent death, Which is not yet avenged for him,” I said, “By any who is sharer in the shame, Made him disdainful; whence he went away, As I imagine, without speaking to me, And thereby made me pity him the more.” (Alighieri 193) This is when he sees his friend in hell and realizes that he needs to overcome his flaw, hubris, and try to get on the right path to Heaven.

Dante’s restitution is when he gets out of Hell and continues on his journey through Purgatory and Heaven. “We climbed he first, I following--until I saw, through a round opening, some of those things of beauty Heavens bears. It was from there that we emerged, to see--once more--the stars.”(Alighieri 317). This shows that Dante is grateful for being out of hell. He sees the stars and realizes that he is out of hell and he can continue his journey through Purgatory and Heaven. He will be able to tell his tale to everyone he knows and will be able to warn

In each literary and folk epic there are characters called epic heroes, epic heroes can be seen as superhuman because of their outstanding achievements but what makes the plot is that they are on a larger than life quest. Along the way there is major conflict, like fear, battles and bloodshed. Achilles from The Iliad written by Homer, Beowulf from Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel and Gilgamesh from Gilgamesh retold by Herbert Manson all are epic heroes and in some ways very similar like their bravery and god-like strength but in other ways they are different. In order to be an epic hero the characters must be brave just as Beowulf was, just to prove how brave he was told his men to “leave your battle shields and your spears” (Beowulf line 130) as they approached the…

In Beowulf, I found myself idolizing over the strong and fearless hero. He was what I would call “the perfect hero”, because not only did he get the job done, but he did it so with honor and modesty. In some cases it reminded me of the movie Hercules, where Hercules tried to show off as much as possible and show that he was better than everyone else to gain fame. While Beowulf used his famous strength to help those in need not to just gain fame, but because he knew he was undoubtedly the only one who could help.…
