Essential dynamics of traditional Japanese sumo wrestling have been altered to meet global standards. These alterations have stripped Japanese sumo wrestling of its ties to the Shinto religion. Japanese tradition is infused into professional sumo wrestling. Therefore, the core of Japanese sumo wrestling has been diminished to the point of a non-recognizable existence within amateur sumo wrestling. In traditional sumo wrestling, the wrestlers compete in wrestling rings called dohyos which are symbolic of the Shinto shrines. As far as dress is concerned, wamashis are worn to cover and protect the private parts of the wrestlers, and hair is placed into top-knot buns. Dohyos have been replaced with mats, wamashis with spandex shorts, and top-knot buns with crew cuts. Tradition is very important to the Japanese culture because it serves as a sense of nationalism to Japan’s natives. Nationalism is a collective, shared feeling, or attachment to one’s nation. Japanese nationalism has two divisions that separate the culture and traditions from the politics and state.
