In the eighth grade, I remember that in less than a week I made half of the student body resent me. I had just moved to a new school in a new neighborhood, and I was eager to prove myself. On my first day, I walked into my favorite class – science and was the only person to answer the teacher’s questions. In my old school, I was learning something entirely different, but I still knew the answer because it was about my favorite subject. Everyone was pretty shocked, and I didn’t understand all the looks that my classmates were giving me.
It wasn’t until English class, my second favorite subject, that I finally understood. The class was in the middle of doing a project that our teacher had assigned on a book – The Giver. She told me that I didn’t have to participate because I wasn’t there since the beginning of the term. Being the nerd that I was and still am, I told my teacher to give me the assignment because I thought of it as a challenge. After two days, which was when the assignment was due, I came back with the project and book in my hands, ready to go. Everyone was shocked when they saw me, including my teacher. We found the solution in Penn Foster High School, an online school. It was a learning center where I could learn at my own personal pace. When I heard this, I was excited and yet terrified. This was a big decision. It meant not going to a normal high school where I could be taught by teachers in person five days a week and be around kids my own age. As soon as I walked through the school grounds, today, I felt an aura of hate going throughout the atmosphere. Kids would look at me and point at me, as if I was a monster. Things started to get even worse when Ms Caroline saw that I did not have any lunch, and she asked me if I wanted a quarter to buy lunch in town. I really wanted to eat with the money that Ms Caroline Fisher offered to give me, but, coming from a poor family, I did not want to take anything that I could not give back. Right when I was about to respond to the teacher, Scout Finch goes up to the teacher and publicly shames me in front of the class.…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

To all the doctors, teachers, peers, and family members who didn’t believe I would amount to greatness, thank you. When I was young, I didn’t understand why school seemed more challenging for me than it did for everyone else. I couldn’t discern why I was unable to distinguish my right from my left no matter how many times my teacher sighed and told me it was simple or why I could complete math problems perfectly then copy my answer wrong between the work area and the answer line.…

As I walked through the front doors of Allentown Central Catholic High School, I felt a sudden rush of panic. Everything I had once seen and had once been familiar with in middle school quickly vanished into thin air. I was terrified, not because I thought I was going to get lost, but because I knew that every little quiz I took, every little paper I wrote, and every exam I labored over would now count toward my ultimate goal of getting into a prestigious university. I wasn’t scared of new faces, but rather new beginnings and experiences.…

There are several factors for me wanting to transfer to Simpson College. I went to high school in Indianola and I like the small town feel along with the big city competitiveness. Indianola is a place that I have had great leaders and experiences that my children, in the future, would be able to learn and experience life, like I did. In high school, I had the privilege to be taught and mentored by Kevin Barnes, who also went to Simpson College. He talked highly about Simpson College and everything he had accomplished there; so, I've always been intrigued by the idea of receiving an education and competing there as well.…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

I was in a very interesting situation with high school. I was able to do high school in a traditional setting as well as online, and I did online schooling two different ways. Online and traditional schooling are both very good ways to learn, but not everything works for everyone. A lot of people like myself respond better to online schooling and for good reason. Online schooling is more ideal than traditional schooling because you get to work at your own pace, there are less distractions than a traditional school setting, it can be a lot more challenging than a traditional school, and I was able to be a lot more flexible with my time.…
