Valerie inviting relaxed demeanor made me feel welcome and comfortable. She is easy to talk with, open and happy to answer personal questions regarding herself. Valerie never imagined she would end up serving the elderly population as a social worker when she started college. While attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Valerie decided to get her B.A. in broadcast journalism. After graduation Valerie spent one summer being a teacher’s aide and helping children of migrant farm workers. This experience was life changing for Valerie who decided to go back to school for a Masters in Social Work at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Valerie was offered a job with Cedar’s Home for Children after interning there during school. Initially she loved working at Cedars but after a while working with troubled children and their families took a toll on her mentally and physically and decided a change was needed. Bryan Health hired Valerie for the positon of social worker where she helped with the discharge planning of clients as well as provided counseling for people receiving services in the oncology and trauma departments. This job gave Valerie an opportunity to work with the elderly population for the first time. I have visited a few large long-term care facilities in the past but came away with negative feelings because the facilities smelled of urine and many of the residents lined the hallways trying to grasp even just a little attention from everyone walking by. These places had a certain aura or presents about them which screamed sadness, distress, anger, hunger for attention, isolation and being unsanitary. Eastmont Towers was fortunately totally different in every aspect from the other facilities I have visited. Upon entering Eastmont Towers I immediately felt warm and welcomed just like I was walking into the home of a family member. Valerie being earnest to share all that Eastmont Towers has to offer took me on a tour of the facility. During the tour Valerie acknowledged every resident and co-worker we passed and called them all by name which is impressive. This small gesture shows that Valerie respects those she works with and enjoys conversing with them. Eastmont Towers has worked hard to make its residents feel at home while living here by offering many places for residents to socialize in including a separate dining room on every floor. I love that Eastmont Towers offers a guest room for family and friends to stay in while visiting residents. Eastmont exceeded my expectations of what a retirement facility should be like in looks, staff and services offered. Every staff member I was introduced to was
