A practical and powerful method of constructing and analyzing arguments is the Toulmin Argument, so named after its creator British philosopher Stephen Toulmin. This method asserts to breaking down an argument into several parts, The claim,evidence, Warrants backing and qualifiers all form the building blocks of Toulmin’s argument structure.
The claim is the argument you wish to prove (130), the main part of the argument. It answers the question, so what’s you point? Where do you stand? Good claims, usually controversial and debatable is often formulated from personal experience. The claim is sometimes be explicitly stated at any point within the argument, or it may be implied, in which case the claim would be inferred. An example of this is taken from the Donald Trumps presidential campaign website (n.d) “A nation without borders is not a nation” the claim is controversial and states his point.

This is referred to as the warrant, this explain why or how the evidence presented supports the claim. Warrants often tells assumptions, which must be accepted by the audience in order to proceed. The values of the audience, the context of the claim and the writers own feelings should be taken into consideration when choosing the warrant. For example Trump (n.d), “Make Mexico Pay For The Wall” – warrant; “A nation without borders is not a nation…the Government Accountability Office found that there were a shocking 3 million arrests attached to the incarcerated alien population.” When the warrant is not immediately accepted by the audience, a defense must be given for the warrant in order to satisfy the audience.
