The The Tortilla Curtain (1995) is a novel written by U.S. author T.C. Boyle, whose other works includes The Harder They Come (2015). The Tortilla Curtain was awarded the French Prix Médicis Étranger prize for best foreign novel (About the Author). The book is aimed towards a more mature audience including immigrants and wealthy people living in the United States. The novel 's purpose is to show us how both illegal immigrants and wealthy people struggle while living in America. The story is about a Mexican immigrant named Cándido who accidentally got hit by a car driven by liberal humanist named Delaney Mossbacher. Even nowadays it is hard for women to find a job that pays well enough to barely get by. According to the United States Department of Labor, There were 127.1 million working age women (16 years of age and older, civilian non-institutional population) in the U.S. in 2013 and only 18.7 million were of Hispanic or Latino ethnicity (Women 's Bureau). That’s not even 6.8 percent of the women working in the U.S. It is especially hard for an illegal immigrant to find a job because most jobs in the U.S. require proof of citizenship and social security. America experiences this difficulty when looking for a job in a labor exchange, where she had waisted four days waiting for hours without any luck. Illegal immigrants can have or receive social security but the process takes years to go through. As an American citizen, if you are pregnant and in search for a job, the chances of finding one are slim. No one is going to want to hire someone who cannot work long hours or they could go into labor, which will cause them to miss work for a long time. At this point it would three times as hard to find a job being a pregnant woman and an illegal immigrant. For now, América will have to stick with Cándido until their lives become both emotionally and financially
