We’d rather concentrate on all the ways in which hard work rewards people. This allows us to justify inequalities in society on the basis of merit (individual and group) instead of acknowledging the unearned privileges and disadvantages that accrue to individuals and groups based, usually, on the luck of birth” (Edwards, p.89).
It’s easier for everyone to just try harder and harder in order to win, rather than to take a step back and look at what is in their way obstructing their path, and acknowledge that it is not in everyone’s way. There is more equality now than there was in the 16th century regarding women, but there is one thing that still separates them, privileges. Men are more privileged in society all over the world than women are. Men are seen as the providers, the professionals, the heroes, the owners or they are simply seen as men. You do not get to choose what you want. There are several of white privileged people who do not acknowledge that they are privileged because then they will see themselves different when they rather see others different. Some even ignore the fact that they are white. There are social standards that must be met in order to in a specific social class. Every single social class has their own status and their own set of privileges. These cannot be interchanged and one can obtain more, but must acknowledge that they exist first.
