Michelangelo Buonarroti, the well known painter, sculptor and architect for his famous
Sistine chapel and marble statue of David has a current exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of
Art called the Michelangelo Divine Drafter and Designer. This exhibit has more than 200 pieces of sculptures, paintings, sketches, and even poems that he has done through his life time. Some of these are rare to see on exhibit because they fragile and hard to come by. Three of these pieces are Torment of Saint Anthony, Bacchanal of Children, and Punishment of Tityos.

Michelangelo got the idea for the painting after seeing a similar engraving done by Martin Schongauger. It is brightly colored with reds and oranges on the demons and in the back the sky is bright as if the sun is behind them. The bright background and brightly colored demons draw your attention to Saint Anthony. The demons also show a lot of texture with there jagged teeth, scales, and spikes.
Bacchanal of Children is a small sketch done in red chalk on paper. It is one of four that
Michelangelo made as a gift for his friend Cavalieri. The detail with this chalk is remarkable and even know it is all done in red chalk it still has a lot of texture in the rocks and details. This piece has a lot of small children in groups. Each group of children are doing something different. The group in the top left corner are cooking and cleaning and in the top right they are drinking from a wine butt. The two groups at the bottom left and right are caring for the drunken adults and in the middle the group of children are carrying a deer. They say this piece was done to warn

Michelangelo had a very strong friendship with Cavalieri even know their ages were quiet different with Michelangelo in his early fifties and Cavalieri in his late teens.
Michelangelo gave him many pieces of art, letters, and poems. This piece was done in black chalk on paper. You can see a lot of texture in the large birds feathers and the difference in contrast. Tityos has a darker contrast then the rest of the picture making him stand out more and become the focal point. In this black chalk drawing of Tityos, the son of Zeus, is tied down on his back onto a large rock. At the end of the rock is a tree with what looks to be a face pultruded out screaming. The large vulture is over tityos torturing him. It is said that Tityos is being punished for attempting to rape Leto. He is tied down to this rock while two vultures rip out and feed on his liver daily because it grows back every night.
These three are just a small portion of what the Metropolitan Museum of Art has to offer with this exhibit. There are over 200 more pieces that show Michelangelos talents as a sculptor and painter. And a large number of these you do not usually get to see on
