He risks his life more than once to save his friends and gives up his own reward to keep the peace between creatures he has never met. Although Bilbo only recognized his courage through the numerous encounters he faced on his journey, he hadn’t realized he had strength and audacity all along. Bilbo’s perseverance allowed him to accomplish anything he put his mind to. In addition, Bilbo’s companions helped expose this selfless hobbit allowing him to care for others as much as himself. When Bilbo, who is predominantly average to begin with, is all but thrown out the door of his peaceful home to risk the threats of the road, he is uneasy and useless. Along the way Bilbo is given ambition by Gandalf to continue on with his heroic journey, where he slowly comes to identify and apply his natural valor for the wellbeing of all those involved.
