The title of the short story “Rocking-Horse Winner” is very significant. The rocking-horse is a recurring object throughout the story, bringing the little boy’s dreams to life. Repeatedly the young boy, Paul, believes he is lucky because his mother tells him it takes luck to become rich. Although he does not know why he feels lucky, he believes it must be God who told him he is. While it seems to be luck, it is actually the rocking-horse that brings the young boy his winnings.
Paul constantly rides his rocking-horse in anger, willing it to bring him luck and fortune. Later on his uncle visits the family. When he sees Paul riding his rocking-horse, he asks what he has named the horse. “He was called Sansovino last week,” says Paul. Instantly
