There have been many changing events in American history, some valuable and some atrocious. Many significant ways that are continued in today’s life have come from these changes. People for years have taken to music for relaxation, social gatherings, and even political statements. There were many artists who used their lyrics to persuade listeners to understand issues within different eras. Just as Bob Dylan in the 1960’s used his words to influence people to understand events such as civil rights movement, failings of the government, and the draft of the Vietnam War. Dylan’s album of protest songs conveys the people’s strength during protest and the need for others to listen to what was being said. With the fighting in Vietnam, the assassination of key leaders, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr, the country was in turmoil with several events. Displeased with government actions and the beginning of the draft was making people like Bob Dylan feel that someone had to stand up for the people who were being mistreated and for the civil rights that were ignored.
The discontent towards the government during this period had many of the Americans protesting any involvement in everything, especially the Vietnam War. The government engaged in the war in 1964 over a claim that N. Vietnamese boats engaged a destroyer (U.S. Maddox) off the shoreline of Vietnam. Dylan describes in his song, in the third stanza, for the government officials to hear the peoples cry for change that understand the battle outside, may be a civil rights unrest:

During President George W. Bush’s time as president, we as Americans witnessed a great tragedy in New York City with the attacks on September 11th, 2001. These attacks changed the outlook of many people’s thoughts and lives with U.S. involvement in the war on terrorism. Just as with the Vietnam War, people today express through protest, the many decisions the government makes. Situations all over the globe are being questioned as to why our government is involved. People today are more sincere in wanting to know more about what the needs and involvement of powerful revolution are. Standing up for what is right and educating yourself to the things that are deceptive and faulty could bring change that one-day will take
