With the negative effects of technology and social class, humanity evolved into the Eloi and the Morlocks, whom are no longer the same species although they once were. The Morlocks and Eloi, living in two distinctly different environments, have different appearances based on the mutations that occurred. The Morlocks, living underground in a pitch black area, was distinctly different from the Eloi. “I saw a small, white, moving creature, with large bright eyes which regarded me steadfastly as it retreated” (wells 47). The morlocks, being trapped underground for a long period of time, started to adapt to the darkness and eventually turned into what they were. The lack of light underground played in the big eyed morlocks’ favor. Reflecting light, it helps the Morlocks see underground. The Morlocks are more weary of the time traveler because they are cautious of what can harm them as they need to defend for themselves. The Eloi, being above ground with plenty of sunlight and resources, evolved differently than the Morlocks. “Their hair, which was uniformly curly, came to a sharp end at the neck and cheek; there was not the faintest suggestion of it on the face, and their ears were singularly minute. . . eyes were large and mild” (Wells 24-25).
