There I was, lying in bed watching television with my aunt. Then suddenly, a Barbie commercial came on. Seeing the colors, and the adjectives that described the products. Seeing how fun it looked to actually play with that doll. Seeing how great it looked to have an actual house where dolls can live.…
One of the most common mistakes people make is that they define talent and skill synonymously. However, they are two completely different things. Talent you have naturally, you don’t have to work at it. Skill is ability developed from hours and hours of practice at your craft. My best talent is by far my ability to succeed in school, and my natural affinity for STEM topics.…
Insecurity Growing up on a farm with two older brothers, I was a bit of a tomboy. From birth until age seven, my favorite toys were Tonka trucks and wooden guns. I wrestled in the mud, ate like a teenage boy, and at the age of five took scissors to my hair, chopping it into a pixie cut, so I could “be like my older brothers”. Innocently, I wore my barn clothes to school and my kindergarten picture displays my hair in a rats nest, with a large crooked smile, and bright eyes. However, that yearbook picture changed as my innocence faded away.…

As a biracial child in America, I never quite fit in. Growing up in Mendocino,California with exactly one “black” girl (myself) in the entire school, I was the go to for questions about rap music, dance moves and slang. I felt as if I was a representative for the entire African American race even though I am just as white as I am black. Once I left the sheltered bubble of Mendocino, I saw more people that didn’t look like me which left me in an identity crisis, everyone had a community except for me. My African family praised my fairness, and adored my curly tresses, but my white family didn't understand what to do with it.…
What am I good at is a question to ponder, however, the first think that comes to my mind is a talent that I work towards improving, golf. Every day I work towards improvement and when I think about it I also see it as my passion. In this case I think that both the mind and the heart overlap. While I am good at it because it challenges me it also forces me into uncomfortable positions. Many would think that they wouldn’t want to do something that isn’t easy and a breeze but that is where the passion comes for the game, because it isn’t something that I have a lot of experience in other sports.…
If there is one thing that I have always been good at, it is cooking. I don't remember when I started to cook but I noticed my abilities as a young chef around the age of seven. I would sit with my mom and watch cooking shows and help her in the kitchen. These interactions with the culinary world greatly influenced me to want to pursue a career in the culinary arts. I remember being home one night.…

I see myself being an avid participator of the industry of cosmetology where I get involved in the community and provide my services to people within reasonable price ranges and be able to provide them with amazing results. My goal is to be able to change how people view themselves in the negative light and teach them to appreciate their beauty by helping them understand certain ways of bringing out their best features. With all I will learn by going to school, I want to be able to give back to people in the community who are less fortunate than I, particularly by giving haircuts to the homeless for free. Doing so I hope to somehow be able to lighten their load by making them feel good and confident about themselves with a newly styled look.…
Often, women walk down the beauty aisle of a department and grocery stores and see all types of merchandise for their hair, but not many know what the products are right for them. They see products that promise to rejuvenate dry, damaged hair; volumize limp, flat hair; straighten curly hair, and regenerate thinning hair. With my hair being a kinky curl, when I was younger, I would ask my mother if we could buy relaxers and apply them at home. She would give me the same answer every time, “This should only be performed by a professional if you do not want to ruin your hair.”…

As time is ticking by and decisions for my future are needing to be made, I struggle pinpointing what exactly I should do as my profession. I think that I know a little about a lot of different things, so it’s hard to decide just one of the many that I think I do well at and enjoy. However, one of my hobbies has really begun to be highlighted as I am getting more recognition for my work. That hobby is doing hair and makeup. It has become my new job goal, but I do need to consider a few things; why I think this job suits me, what I will need to do to become an artist, and some of the positives and negatives of this being my profession.…
Everyone has a special talent or ability, my talent is drawing. I wasn’t born an artist or particularly skilled at all, but I knew from a young age that talents are what set us apart from others and make us unique. In elementary and through middle school, I was encouraged by my teachers and parents to find my talent or interest. However, nothing genuinely interested me and I didn’t consider myself talented. Though I hadn’t found my talent ,by the start of middle school, if not earlier, the people close to me had found their talents or interests and they began to pursue it.…
