Ryan deals with poverty in several different ways. Ryan was unemployed, homeless, and his education level stops at the 10th grade. He bounces around from home to home. He attempted to find jobs; however, his lack of education makes it difficult for him to get one. Whenever, he does land a job he has a difficult time making it to work, because he did not have a dependable means of transportation. According to Ryan, he did not qualify for welfare because he does not have and active address to use. Therefore, food stamps and health insurance was out of the question. Even when it comes to his masculinity, he questions it because he cannot to afford to provide for his children, or himself, this is another reason why he resorts to violence. Adams (2007) explains, “Young men with weak oversight demonstrated a premature autonomy and tended to be embedded in networks that promoted high risk behaviors. Firstly, the Black Lives Matters movements opened his eyes up to the inequality, and disregard that minorities in America faces. The Black Lives Matters movement influenced it has had on him to attempt to shake the stereotypes associated with the color of his skin. The movement alone has given him hope for change. He has experience being racially profile by the police on more than one occasion. He also witnessed his stepfather murdered by the police. This movement alone meant a lot to him. Secondly, Obama becoming president, made him feel the black community has took a few steps in being more accepted in the nation.
