The organizational metaphor that best describe Newport News Shipbuilding is the flex and transformation metaphor. The organization is affected and changed because of the environment, whether internal or external. Though there may be change that occurs, the organization is able to self-organize, change, and self-renew to align with its original identity (Morgan, 2009). According to Morgan (2009), with change there is chaos because change naturally emerges out of chaos. As part of the changes that occur the organization is to transform as a result.…

Summaries of Chapter 1 & 2 in Reframing Organizations by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal (450)Chapter 1: Introduction: The Power of Reframing This chapter defines Bolman and Deal’s (2008) evaluation of leadership strategies, which involved the process of “reframing” the perspective of the manager. This reframing process is initially describe by the example of Home Depot CEO, Robert Nardelli, as part of this ever-changing learning process in leadership development. This example provides insight into Nardelli’s excellent operational skills as a manager, but his close-mindedness towards customer service and employee morale: “Nardelli’s old boss, Jack Welch, called him the best operations manager he’d ever seen. Yet, as talented and successful as he was, Nardelli flamed out at Home Depot because he was only seeing part of the big picture” (Bolman and Deal 4).…

As told by President Harry Truman, “In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” Leadership has always played pivotal role in every achievement one has ever accomplished. We in every stage of our lives, come across many people who lead the way and set a path for others to take and accomplish. Leaders have to make ethical decisions based on the resources that they have available. If the leader is still uncomfortable with the decision they have made, the leader should ask their colleagues and use their collective knowledge and experience to make a more considered decision. (Swinton, 2007, p. 1) There are times when a leader must listen to their instincts to come up with a decision. Once the decision has been made the leader must stand behind that decision even if it isn’t the right one and accept responsibility for it being inadequate. When making a decision a leader must take those choices seriously.…

Leadership is much more complicated than providing guidance to a group of individuals or an organization, it is multidimensional and requires both experience and knowledge. A powerful quote from Carly Fiorina proves my point, she said: “Leadership is about making a positive difference for and with others. Leadership is about the integrity of one’s character, the caliber of one’s capabilities, and the effectiveness of one’s collaboration with others.” Reflecting on this statement, I realize I am not a picture-perfect leader, but I have certain strengths and weaknesses that, if further developed, could help me one day become a valued leader.…

Leadership Kathy Dunlap Bethel University MOD 310 April 24, 2017 Kameke Payne Leadership No one theory of leadership has ever been accepted by all, but the common thought of leadership is that it is an influence process, occurs within a group, involves goals, and attainment. Some people think leaders are born with a trait that innately makes them leaders, while others theorize that it is a characteristic of an individual, but we have learned that leaders are a product of their development and life experiences. Leaders are concerned with understanding people’s beliefs and gaining their commitment. They function without focusing on the opinions of others, which allows them to think of new ideas and motivate others to develop these…
