The three major government components of the criminal justice system are law enforcement, the courts, and corrections. An easier way to remember the components is with the acronym of the 3 C's which means cop, courts, and corrections.
Law Enforcement The component of law enforcement is composed by local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, prosecuting attorneys, and victim and witness services (Ortmeier, 2005, p. 2). The main job of the law enforcement component is to enforce laws and keep the peace without violating the citizens constitutional rights.
The Courts The courts are composed by trial and appellate courts both state and federal and public defenders (Ortmeier, 2005, p. 2). The main job of the courts components is
