The causes of amputation vary greatly from region to region around the world. The three main causes of amputation are disease, trauma and congenital deformities. The major diseases that contribute to amputation are diabetic and peripheral vascular diseases., Tumors accounts for 2 % and trauma causes 45 % of amputations around the word. Individuals who have amputations due to disease are older. Amputation usually occurring after age sixty (60) years of age. Vascular disease with poor circulation is the commonest cause for amputation in old age.
