I have been a preceptor to many nurses and am constantly honing my skills on one-to-one communication, giving recognition, and being objective and consistent. Every new nurse comes with a different set of abilities and confidence levels. When I am coaching a new employee, I have the employee state what he or she believes is their strengths and weaknesses. Where the employee feels confident, I let them take the lead and provide praise when they do a job well. I recently worked as a manager with four other managers with strong personalities. In this setting I recognized that in these circumstances I have difficulty asserting myself and speaking out when my opinions differ from the group. Also, I have a fear of speaking before many people, so conducting meetings can be an intimidating experience for me. Lastly, when I have done performance reviews with marginal employees, I want to be the “good guy”, so I will emphasize their strong points and mildly state the areas that I want to see performance
