Coach Albertson Character Analysis

In sports many people believe that the winning team always has the best players. To an extent, I believe, this to be true. I believe for a team to truly be successful they need a great coach. A great coach, in my opinion, has three traits - Leadership, toughness, and the ability to connect with people- that separate them from average coaches (10). I have played under two men who have possessed these three character traits. The names of those men, although I referred to them as “coach,” are Joe Albertson and Jareese Williams.(11) Being a leader or having leadership can be a tough trait to define. One unmistakable sign of leadership is just plain production. In coaching, production is labeled in one way- the win column. Coach Albertson always finds his way to keep his win column in check (BE 12). I remember as a kid watching his teams and the varying talent levels he had to foresee over. Whether Joe had four all-state players or one all-conference player he always managed to win fifteen or more games. Coach Albertson is tough- tough in how he runs his team. (14) Yet, physically he is not intimidating. A giant he is not.(16) Joe is a stern coach and his players know they can either play his way or not play at all. Jareese exemplifies toughness, for me. Coach Williams gained this toughness from the many experiences he has had growing up. Coach Williams grew up in Washington, D.C. in the inner city. He lost many friends and was raised by his grandmother. When Jareese would play with us at practice it showed just how tough he was in the gritty manner he played. I think one can tell a lot about how a person behaves just in the way they play basketball. Whether playing or practicing or doing skill work both coaches demand toughness from everyone in the
