Discrimination in a working environment is a raging controversy internationally. Gender, ethnicity, and race are three components that contribute to the problem. Although federal laws forbid discrimination in workplaces, it is ignored. According to the National Conference for Community and Justice, seventy percent of Americans accept that there are racism related issues at work. Alana Lentin, author of Racism and Ethnic Discrimination, stated, “The common answer to this evident problem, which is met with increasing support in mainstream commentary, is that it is precisely the fact of living together in culturally diverse societies that leads to the persistence of racism.” Thus, certain people assume that the issue can not be resolved because …show more content…
It is common that it can be influenced at a young age. Often, adult guardians have significant influences on their children and can pass beliefs along. Thus, some people are brought up with certain opinions that can lead to discriminating as an adult in a workplace. Fiona Miller, a representative of Demand Media, once said, “When an individual receives unequal treatment due to his ethnicity, this is known as disparate impact and disparate treatment, respectively.” Disparate treatment is commonly connected with work. In addition, Fiona Miller explained that employees can be specifically grouped for having different standards about promotions and punishments in a company. Aime Casagrande, a current guidance counselor at a school stated, “I find that people tend to stick with their favor or ‘kind.’” This quote is referring to the proven fact that when choosing between employees, the person in charge may pick the one most similar to them when considering gender, race or ethnicity. In addition, Aime Casagrande explained that people may discriminate against people because they fear or hate them. Felix Q. Vinluan has used the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1991 to prove that there are federal laws protecting people against discrimination. A journalist for HR Hero said that every company has a Human Resources department that can be contacted if one is felt to be discriminated against. The team of people can look further into the cause and find its relevance and truth. Also, the EEOC, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, can be reached out to if there is a problem. With many laws protecting people, these authorities can make a difference and remind the people committing the hate of the law. If an individual has enough confidence in themself, they can freely confront the discriminating person and explain their problem. If ignored and continuously bothered, a person may keep moving up to higher authorities until someone will listen to them.
