Beowulf fought three different battles in the story, one with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon. Beowulf prepared differently for each battle, and each battle had a different outcome, except that Beowulf killed each of the three monsters that he had fought. Beowulf went to Heorot to fight Grendel, the monster that had been terrorizing the Danes, because he thought that he was the only one that could kill the monster and decided to prove that he could kill Grendel. Before the battle with Grendel, the Geats that accompanied Beowulf, as well as all of the Danes in Heorot have a feast, and then begin to prepare for the battle with Grendel that night. In order to prepare for Grendel, Beowulf removed all of his armor and his mail, and decided …show more content…
Beowulf was not there at the time, but the other soldiers make Grendel’s mother flee Heorot, but not before she killed Aeschere, one of Hrothgar’s advisors. Beowulf decides that he will go out and kill Grendel’s mother, return the claw that she had stolen from Heorot as well as Grendel’s head. For this battle Beowulf decides to wear armor, and he also fights with a sword, which is different from his battle with Grendel, because during that battle Beowulf used neither armor or any type of weapon. Beowulf, the Geats, and many Danes then go on an expedition to find and kill Grendel’s mother. When they arrive at the lake that Grendel’s mother lives in, Beowulf decides to go in alone, this is similar to his decision in the battle, because he wanted to fight this battle alone as well. After swimming underwater to Grendel’s mother’s lair for almost a day the battle begins and Beowulf is immediately saved by the armor that he was wearing. The sword that he brought with him did no damage to Grendel’s mother and was knocked away. Then Beowulf uses a sword, big enough for a giant, to decapitate Grendel’s mother, and after that Grendel’s own dead body. Beowulf swims out of the lake and the men waiting for him are only the Geats, because the remainder believed he was dead, as a result of Grendel’s mother’s blood rising to the surface of the lake. When Beowulf returned to Heorot with the Geats, they are again

Starting with Grendel, it was “one fall, one submission, and one knock-out bout” (Orchard 1) with no real threat to Beowulf’s life, and he kills Grendel with ease. Grendel is the first monster and requires one of everything, and this is just the beginning of a succession that continues between the three monsters. This succession is a connection between the three that may not be picked up on without further examination. Second, Beowulf moves up to Grendel’s mother who nearly kills Beowulf and takes a “two-fall fight…two swords, and Grendel’s mother two weapons also” (Orchard 1). The second monster requires two of everything and the challenge becomes slightly more difficult for Beowulf to combat.…
