You live in Syria, your hometown is taken over by terrorists. As if the terroristic violence is enough, you constantly hear the roar of drones invading the skies. At work with your co-workers and at home with your families, every second of the day you ponder upon the question, “Am I next?”. Target drone strikes create even more unnecessary fear in neighborhoods taken over by terrorists. We should stop trying to end terrorism with lethal force such as drone strikes. They kill more than just a terrorist group. Drone strikes started well before technology was even practiced. Columbia Law school recently combined data and statistics on drone strikes in 2012, concluding the deaths of civilians during these target drone strikes. They gathered data from the CIA and United states Department of Defense and other resources listed. Over the years of 2006-2012 it is concluded that individuals who died during target drone strikes, 90% of them were not the target. The Center for Civilians in Conflict go on to explain their data retrieved, “In Pakistan, statistics are compiled by both Pakistan-based organizations and foreign organizations, and they vary.103 The Bureau of Investigative Journalism reports a total of 2,562 to 3,325 total killed in drone strikes, including 474 to 881 civilian deaths as of September 2012” ( Law 19). There are a lot of civilian lives lost to these drone strikes. This is including women and children. In the year 2008, there has been 168-204 deaths of children due to target drone strikes. Columbia Law explains some recent events, “In Somalia, on October 4, 2011, al-Shabaab bombed the Transitional Federal Government compound in Mogadishu as revenge for the growing number of drone strikes against its forces, according to one report. The suicide bombing killed over 70 people and injured hundreds more, most of whom were Somali teenagers.108” ( Law 26). This story is significant because it shows that drone strikes can kill indirectly. It sparks more civilian violence than control it.
