I believe that each person has a breaking point and that when he or she reaches it, their nature is changed. The narrator opens the story by explaining the countless amount of injuries that this name named Fortunado has caused against him. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato” (Poe 390). This vast number of instances have added up over a great deal of time. He had enough time to develop a relationship with this man and for there to be that many injuries. I believe that this is a weakness that I have. I often hold onto my grudges and the misdeeds that people commit against me. I watch as they build up one after another until they are about to burst as they did for the narrator. Instead of confronting the perpetrator at the beginning, I wait till

Those with this condition find themselves requiring an excessive amount of admiration, exploiting others in ways that takes advantage of them, and lacking empathy towards others by not recognizing their feelings (Narcissistic). While it is not apparent that Montresor needs “excessive” admiration, it is revealed that his desire to murder Fortunato is due to the fact that he insulted him as the story begins with the sentence “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge,” proving that this “revenge” was merely over a negative comment towards Montresor (Poe 166). It seems to show that Montresor was easily offended by remarks that were not to…

Everyone has something. Everyone has their own escape. Everyone has their own story. Born into carefully made wars; into emptiness; into internal fights; into self-discovery - all operated in treatment of bearing with guilt, grace, and redemption or salvation. It is incredibly human to feel blame, to still tally the number of times to expect a certain face in a crowd; to have weaknesses in order to be reached, to be sought, to be touched in areas where numbness lies.…

Fortunato makes himself an easy target by his arrogance, he's too trusting, and his ignorance of hurting Montresor. Fortunato's impairment ultimately betrays him in the end.…

(Jacoby)” Montresor manipulated Fortunato into thinking he was a friend of his and continued to go to great lengths to fulfill his deceitful plans of vengeance. Montresor is a very intriguing character who seems to have multiple personas throughout the short story. At first Montresor convinces the reader that he has the right to punish Fortunato for his wrong doing, but when Montresor lacks to explain exact details of these “injuries” it becomes clear to the reader that Montresor is an extremely unstable narrator, who just doesn’t seem to have a sense of reason or forgiveness. Montresor verbally, physically, and mentally tortured Fortunato with his lack of rational behavior that exempted him of all logical reasoning and justification of the dispute and miscommunication between the two characters. The outcome of Montresors revenge was extremely daunting; he exposed himself to be a very deceitful and a demented…

It is ironic because according to Behind the Name, Fortunado means fortunate in Italian and this character is the exact opposite of that. Montressor, the main character, ends up killing Fortunado to make him feel the pain that Fortunado made him feel. Throughout the story Poe keeps writing in a way that makes it seem as though Montresor is concerned about Fortunado’s well being. Poe writes, “we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; … we will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible” (545).…
