After the brutal murder of John Fulton an autistic twelve-year-old boy, Kimberly Noyes was declared not criminally responsible due to mental disorder. This is a Canadian law that states, “No person is criminally responsible for an act committed or an omission made while suffering from a mental disorder that rendered the person incapable of appreciating the nature and quality of the act or omission or of knowing that it was wrong.”(Canadian Criminal Procedure, 2013) This verdict may be shocking at first, because of the brutality and age of the victim involved. It was known that Noyes’s family had tried endlessly to get her the help she needed, but professionals neglected it. Perhaps if there weren’t the presence of autism, her victim would have been able to get out of the situation alive. It’s clear that these women didn’t have malicious intent because she didn’t plan the murder and didn’t know the victim personally. Noyes’ believed so deeply in her delusion that she didn’t realize what she was doing was wrong. This random attack was unprovoked and almost impossible to predict. The only thing predicable was the severity of Noyes’s mental illnesses and the fact that she wasn’t getting the proper treatment for them. It was said that Noyes hadn’t been taking her medication for over two-weeks. This is a significant period---- research something about withdrawal meds- Her body could be going into withdrawals and the chemicals in her brain were definitely being affected by the sudden removal of medication. This woman should have gotten the proper help she needed so that all of this could have been prevented. The murder of John Fulton most likely wouldn’t have happened had Noyes been taking her medication steadily and had been checked out on a regular basis. The neglect on her mental health resulted in the thoughtless murder of John Fulton. Millions of individuals suffer from mental illness, but not everyone resorts to murder in the middle of it all. This is not a normal response, which shows something tremendously wrong with Noyes mental well-being.
