Durkheim's Theory Of Suicide Analysis

Finally the third theory begins with that suicide could be hereditary. Durkheim gives examples of why it could be hereditary. After reading the story of Mr. G leaving behind seven children after he decided to commit suicide, and then all this seven children did the same. This really made me believe that suicide could be hereditary. Then he goes on to say that suicide may not be hereditary but possibly just contagious and there he also gives an example of a soldier who blew his brains out and then some else followed the same idea on committing suicide. But after reading both sides whether it could be hereditary or contagious I highly believe it to be contagious because then another example is given regarding a female, her uncle, and her father. The section begins with a table showing compression of the monthly variations of suicides on the length and time of day in France. Durkheim mentions how when the day grow longer suicides are more likely to increase. Brierre de Boismont examined records of suicides committed in Pairs and he found out that from 1834 to 1843 2,094 out of 3,518 committed suicide during the day. 766 during the evening and 658 at night. This statistics is off to show that during the day the sun is out so there is more likely to be heat to cause an individual to commit suicide. Durkheim also mentions in this section that during the day it is more favorable for an individual to commit suicide “because it is also the time when social life is at its height” (Durkheim 119). So this section showed to be that suicide rates increased when social life was more intense. It seems understandable because if the individual is depressed and for some reason they feel out of place it leads them to commit suicide when everyone is at their
