The Thinking Rat

When looking at our daily activities at the end of the day we tend to just focus on what we’ve accomplished and don’t really look at how we achieved it or how did we gain the knowledge to learn and finish the work. In fact, many individuals suppose that only humans learn and obtain knowledge, which is not quite the case. Needless to say, learning is not only a human ability but this ability is present to animals as well. While reading The Thinking Rat by Oscar Pineno, Pineno defines learning as being able to change or adapt behavior according to experience with the environment. Furthermore, throughout the book many mental abilities have been clarified and understood throughtout …show more content…
Personally, I’ve seen sea lions, dolphins, dogs and other animal that are intelligent or either able to catch things quickly. On average I see sea lions and dolphins that shock me at aquariums the most with their spectacular obstacles that they overcome in which they practice so hard to learn. In fact, a species that also caught my interest besides the rat in Oscar Pineno’s The Thinking Rat is the hummingbird. Hummingbirds are the smallest birds and brightest birds. They can flash their bright colors and hide them when needed as well. More importantly, Hummingbirds can see further than an average human and hear from further distance than humans. According to Pineno during Pilfer’s condition memory was a key factor for the hummingbirds. Hummingbirds remembered to catch worms rather then peanuts. If this case was related to humans and they had to pick food they would pick any dish. But the birds remembered to pick to worms after long periods of time. They also remembered where they stored the worms for later use. They’re memory is just as good as human if not better where they remember what they ate, where they ate and what they did to obtain the …show more content…
Furthermore, psychologists and scientists make it seem so proper during the apparatus of the experiment. In my opinion, during classical and operant conditioning preparations I feel as if previous studies make it seem so appropriate for the study of animal intelligence. For example, Burrhus Frederic Skinner and his Skinner box . B.F.Skinner had invented the Skinner box that was used to study operant conditioning. To clarify, Skinner had already set up the Skinner box and now American psychologists today are still using his box to answer the questions that hey ponder about animal conditioning. Another reason that I think preparations of the study of animal intelligence are so appropriate is because animals are also treated with respect. Of course there are negative reinforcements such as shock but we also have to understand animals are also treated with proper care. Food is provided to them prior to experiments, and as a reward. Then scientists and psychologists also make sure that the animals are healthy as well which makes it appropriate for the study of animal
