“They carried the sky. The whole atmosphere, they carried it, the humidity, the monsoons, the stink of fungus and decay, all of it, they carried gravity” Tim O’ Brien once said. In The Think They Carried we learn that the soldiers carry many things to the war; Things that affect them mentally and physically. O’Brien describes each soldier by telling the reader everything that is carried by them. The creation of this fictional people allows O’Brien to explore the real emotions as though they were fictional creations, and simultaneously challenges us when the narrator dismiss a story as fiction when it could easily be true. They would feel like this because many of their relatives wouldn’t even call them while they were at the war. These made the soldiers think that their families had forgotten about them. “They were found abandoned on a battlefield, probably after being cast aside when the wearer felt he might be able to run a little faster without them; or they were found on the body of a fallen Union soldier.” (Wright Vol. 54) This explains how the soldiers only care for themselves and nobody else. Most of this soldiers wouldn’t have had mind leaving another of their soldier to death just so they could save or looked superior to the rest of the soldiers. In The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien portrays a captivating message of responsibility to his readers. Its moral explains how we sometimes let ourselves out of our problems, because we would like to be somewhere pleasant and nice. By telling the reader the different kind of things they were carrying its emphasizes the idea of them not feeling abandon by their own groups of soldiers. “O’Brien states “Stories are for joining the past to the future. Stories are for those late hours in the night when you can’t remember how you got from where you were to where you are.” (Page. 232)This shows the reader how not everything that looks nice is good to do or share with people because it will eventually get
