English 100 Final In the book “The Things They Carried” written by Tim O’Brien, he writes about various mini story about his experience in the Vietnam war. His tales jump ranges from different important moments from the war to how it has affected him during the present time. Each mini story, has a metaphor or deeper meaning behind it and he writes it so the reader can see that. O’Brien wants the reader to think deep and expand their own knowledge. The story themselves, sometimes are nonfiction to fiction to make the reader thinking more than to merely shallow process it. Using this method will help himself, however the readers themselves to think more outside the box then to only think only one way. O’Brien believes that using imagery and metaphors in his stories is more impactful and believable than without it.

In one of the chapters, he writes in depth details about Rat Kiley killing a baby buffalo, because his best friend Curt Lemon had previously died from stepping on a mine. To cope with his feelings Kiley went on a rampage on the baby buffalo. “He stepped back and shot it through the right front knee. The animal did not make a sound, it went down hard, then got up again…”(59). The readers can interpret this killing in many different way, but I believe that the buffalo wasn’t actually a buffalo but a person instead and Kiley had to torture this person to cope with their own lost feelings of losing one of their company’s solder Curt Lemon. At first the reader might not think much about the simple killing buffalo, but O’Brien does not want that from his readers but instead he wants them to think hard and deep about why would the killing of a buffalo is that important and why would write a whole chapter about it.
