I have chosen to write my essay on “The Things They Carried” and the use of setting.in a story.
Working Thesis and Introduction
The use of setting in a story is a vital component in developing background upon which the story will play out. In the short stories by Tim O’Brien, “The Things That They Carried” action takes place in the Vietnam War Era. Throughout this period, there was plenty of political and social conflict taking place in the United States and from this conflict; our protagonist arises to tell his side of the story. The setting of this piece allows the protagonist from home to war zone and back again attempting a since of loss, righteousness and peace.

Day in and day out, he leads his platoon daydreaming with trinkets and letters from this young woman never really paying attention or leading his platoon until one day another of his soldier has is shot and killed. Then does this young First Lieutenant decide to come back to reality and man up, burn his letters and lead his platoon into the war zone. As “Tim” the narrator has left to immigrate over the border he stops at a cabin, while staying he feels peace about himself and decides to return home to serves his time only to awake and “found an envelope tacked to my door. Inside were the four fifties and a two-word note that said emergency fund” O’Brien (1990, pg.51).
