The Thing Is Bass Analysis

Improved Essays
In the poem, The Thing Is, Bass tells about life falling apart right in front of you, “like burnt paper in your hands”. From that single line, I can tell something has happened to her where she felt like it was the end of everything. She watched as her world slipped right through her fingers and couldn’t put them together fast enough. Grief is almost talked about as a being, “When grief sits with you, its tropical heat thickening the air”. Do you ever feel so overwhelmingly sad that you can’t seem to swallow or catch your breathe? Bass reminds you of that feeling with perfect vivity. You can almost feel the knot in your throat as you try and choke it down so you can continue reading.

In 419 by Will Ferguson, there are characteristics of a postmodern Canadian novel. The definition of a “Canadian novel” has changed through the literature movements. Creating moral order and controlling landscapes was used in the colonial period and then, in the confederation period that followed, there was emphasis on nationalism and defining what it was to be Canadian. Nationalism in literature was important because it was necessary for the survival of the country in order to prevent the culture from being overpowered. The novel 419 fits in the categories of literature that came after the confederation period.…

Argumentative Essay Paul Laurence Dunbar’s famous poem, We Wear the Mask, is a sentimental and symbolic poem that refers to the times individuals hide behind masks for various reasons. However, many critics think that this poem only applies to individuals who suffered from slavery. Because many of Dunbar’s poems do reflect images of slavery, some critics argue that “we” in the poem “We Wear the Mask” is referring to slaves. The poet is including himself as a part of the human race rather than speaking from personal experience. Again, critics will argue that the speaker is including himself within his race of people who endured slavery.…

The narrator in the poem is depicted as exposed and anticipative. Dickinson declares, “I willed my keepsakes, signed away What portion of me I Could make assignable” (10-11). She is anticipating death, by cutting her attachment to the physical world. She is waiting for the revelation of death and what it will bring as she lies on her deathbed. Some part of her life will stay behind when she leaves the world, and transitions into death.…

Do you think that the way we grow up has a lasting effect on us? The things we go through and are surrounded by as children will shape our personality and how we deal with things? The underlying theme of these poems is a very deep and difficult subject to talk about, the breakage of a person and of a friendship. The way we deal with our past make us who we are, but how much can a person handle before they break? Stuart broke, Jackson was broken by Stuarts suicide attempt because he didn't know how to react to it, and these poems purpose an idea that we should handle suicide differently because, a suicide effects not only the person but the people around them, it breaks them.…

This poem was deep, and had a lot of emotion. You could tell that the writer had been really hurt and maybe had even been taken advantage of. She had a dark and weary tone, which meant that this was an emotional piece to write and it had a big impact on her life, or someone else’s life. She had a rhythm that flowed nicely, and for the most part the syllables in each stanza matched every time, (which I particularly like).…

As Linda Anderson points out in her book titled Elizabeth Bishop: Lines of Connection, Bishop is usually thought of “in relation to the visual register” when Bishop had a love for music (Anderson, 121). Throughout our readings some of her poems have contained music or musical themes, but “Songs for a Colored Singer” caught my eye in North & South. First, it is important to mention that this poem was written for Billie Holiday, a fact which multiple sources list (including Bishop herself in a letter to U.T. and Joseph Summers), and Bishop had hoped “someone would set the poem to music so that [she] would record it” (Fountain, 328 & Giroux, 478). Billie Holiday was sort of a friend to Bishop, at least Bishop thought so, and her admiration for her is clear both in her want for the singer to sing her poem and the fact that Bishop “followed [Holiday] from night spot to night spot” (Fountain, 86).…

“Death of a Young Son by Drowning” by Margaret Atwood tells the very vivid story of a mother’s son’s death. The tone used by the author was reflective, happy, and yet still sorrowful. Atwood sort of describes the son’s death as an adventure, giving the poem a happy and optimistic tone. She uses words that make it seem almost like a journey, for instance in line 4 she uses “voyage,” in line 25 “long trip,” and line 13 “reckless adventurer,” that make it seem almost exciting. There is also a shift in tone in lines 16-18 when she says, “There was an accident; the air locked, he was hung in the river like a heart.…

The poem “Who Understands Me, But Me” by Jimmy Santiago Baca tells the stories of people who have been through the prison and the difficulties being there. In addition, to what it feels like to not see the sunshine or even being locked up. The writer portrays life as something that can sometimes be hopeless, but towards the end something beautiful can still occur. In like manner, the poem’s speaker lets us know the story of people who are or were prisoners about their experience of being in jail, when following the wrong pathway and having to deal with the consequences of their actions during difficult moments in life.…

This type of hardship sticks around and forever scars a person, in this case the young woman, Bel. As the massage continues we see it said that this monster is unnamable and impossible to actually see. This is partially true as the mental pain and suffering caused by grief is entirely mental, the side effects caused by this grief is the part that outsiders are able to view and analyze. Also playing on the aspect of this monster being on the inside is the concept of being “eaten alive from the inside.” This works with the idea of grief being a silent killer type “wolf”.…
