The theory of speech act was originally proposed by British philosopher J.L. Austin, and later American philosopher Searle made further improvements to this theory. The theory of speech act begins by studying the functions of everyday language. Austin believes that the unit of verbal communication is not a sentence, but a verbal behavior through sentences, such as thanks, warnings, promises, and so on. Austin divides speech acts into three categories: intra-behavioral behavior, illocutionary behavior, and post-verbal behavior. Searle believes that each sentence has a certain potential extra-judicial power. This potential extra-judicial power is an integral part of the sentence meaning. Each meaningful sentence can be used by means of its meaning. …show more content…

The playwright Bernard Shaw's “The Flower Girl” is a classic in the history of English literature. It tells the story of how the professor trained a poor flower girl and eventually made it acceptable to the upper class. William Shakespeare did not become arguably the most famous playwright in the history of the world for coloring inside the lines. In each one of his complex plays, he pushes against the boundaries of social norms. Shakespeare incorporates bold discussions of fleeting love, gender uncertainty, mistaken identity, and ironic comedy into his creative plots during the 1600’s when public discussion on such progressive ideas were rare. In his comedy Twelfth Night, Shakespeare uses dialogue between his three main characters, Viola, Orsino, and Olivia, to express his critique on the strict nature of gender roles during his time. Through his manipulation of his characters’ identities, his placement of women in leadership positions, and his questioning of traditional gender roles, Shakespeare reveals his theme that strict definitions of gender reinforce false stereotypes of both men and women.…

Although Death by Scrabble is a sad but humorous story written by Charlie Fish, in the story, the author utilizes a lot of ironic scenes that provoke readers’ sense of humor rather than lets readers only feel the sadness. One of the irony readers can see is that the husband always expresses the hatred towards his wife while she does not realize anything. It is demonstrated by “I hate my wife,” and it appears a lot of times in the story (1). It stands for the type of dramatic irony, in which the readers know the plot that the character in the story does not know. Another irony in the story is that although the husband wishes for his wife’s death, he is the one who dies at the end of the story, which is totally different from what is expected.…

Verbal irony is when a character conveys a meaning using words that is the opposite of the actual meaning or when a statement contradicts itself, and is seen multiple times during the play. One example of verbal irony in The Crucible is when Abigail says, "Oh, Mary, this is a black art to change your shape. No, I cannot, I cannot stop my mouth; it is God's work I do." Abigail claims that she is doing God's work, but in reality she is doing the devil's work by forcing the girls to lie and causing chaos. Another example of verbal irony is when John Proctor says, "Do that which is good, and no harm shall come to thee."…

An occurrence between Shylock and Gratiano further expresses the meaning of dramatic irony. One reason behind why this ironic is for the reason that in this example the audience knows more to this part of the play than Shylock. When the audience knows something and the character does not then this illustrates an attribute of dramatic irony. In the end, Shylock is not fully aware of Jessica 's current status while the audience is fully aware of Jessica 's status which concludes that this textual evidence is dramatic irony. The author Tina Fey in her excerpt Bossypants, uses comic irony, situational irony, and the incongruity theory of humor to reveal that negative experiences can result in positive outcomes. Throughout the story, comic irony was most evident in the people’s dialects. For instance when Tina Fey refers to the people that ask her about her scar just because “ it’s so beautiful” as “disgusting.” Usually when somebody sympathizes with you and calls a mark on your body beautiful you are grateful, because they were able to see beyond your somewhat tragic experience that left you with that mark, and that mark didn't make you seem any less beautiful in their eyes.…
