Social Disorganization Theory
Schmalleger explains the theory of social disorganization as one that depicts both social change as well as conflict, and lack of any agreement as the origin of its cause for both criminal behavior as well as nonconformity to society and closed associated with the ecological school of criminology (Schmalleger, 2012, p. 152). What I found new and interesting to me was the early study of criminology within the urban settlements and communities in the United States in the early twentieth century. Since these goals cannot be met by lawful methods, they turn to a life of crime and use deceitful ways (Schmalleger, 2012, p. 157). An example of this theory is one of the legendary Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, well-known criminals that traveled the central United States during the time of the Great Depression. They traveled the countryside together with their gang, robbing banks and killing people until they were shot and killed in Louisiana on May 23, 1934 ("Bonnie and Clyde," n.d.). In the book The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison: Ideology, Class, and Criminal it states that the types of crimes committed by Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are indeed the type of crimes committed by people which believe in the American dream and pursue that dream, however they find the traditional routes to that dream barred and pursue the dream by criminal behavior, this is an example of the strain theory (Leighto & Reiman, …show more content…

The Ilegal use of the Khat a flowering plant that is used as a stimulant by East Africans (Somalia, Ethiopian, Yemeni) immigrants here in the United States. The use of Khat is socially and culturally accepted in East Africa but has created a conflicted between law enforcement and the East African community here in the United States, that would be an example of the culture conflict theory (Gennaro & Maahs,
