Karl Marx indicates that the positions, principles, standards, and ethics collectively shared by the majority of the people in any given society will be the methods of social control. The dominant social class, therefore controls how society thinks about their outlook and their place in humanity. Louie Althusser regards the State as a severely constricting apparatus, which is used by the dominant social class as a tool to repress and control the working class. Contrasting to the Repressive State Apparatuses, Ideological State Apparatuses belong to churches, schools, and families. Rather than dominating, and imposing order, through repression, Ideological State Apparatuses support the rule of the dominant social class predominantly through ideology. Althusser implies that in place of the fear of prosecution or violence, humanity will be forced to submit out of fear of social ridicule. Repressive State Apparatus
• While at Hailsham, Ruth, Tommy, Kathy, and the rest of the students are informed of their fate. Miss Lucy lets them know the truth, by explaining that they only exist as organ donors for transplants and that they will “complete” in their early adulthood. She is then immediately let go by the headmistress. The audience is left with an abundance of questions at this point. The only real revelation is that Miss Lucy was sacked, because she looked at the clones with a sense of compassion and humanity. This does not fit into the ideals of a world that just wants to harvest the organs of people for self-preservation.
