Ethical Leadership Reflective Report

The first learning objective of the class was to study the ethical theories and be able to apply them. The readings were helpful in this instance because I think that everything that was taught can be applicable in one way or another. I have an issue with deciding on one specific theory to follow, so I think that everything that I have learned can be used. For example, the theory of egoism is something that I would have used in the past but I am now trying to move away from that mindset. Even though I may not be directly following this theory, I feel like I would be able to recognize someone who thinks this way based solely off of their actions. Having the knowledge to recognize things like this is great way to apply what I have learned. The one theory that I hope to apply to my ethical leadership skills is the theory of respect for persons. A lot of the people that I grew up around were usually leaders without authority but I had never realized it. As a leader, you should not want to do it because of the potential power that may come with it but because of what you stand for is the right thing. The readings on this topic really helped me to understand the concept of leading without authority. One of the stories that I think will always stay with me is the story about the two Lieutenants in Vietnam. Lieutenant Adams knew that there was something wrong with the bombs that were being deployed. It was a struggle for him to decide what the right things was to do, but because he mentioned this to his commanding officer eventually something was done about it.
