During my field experience I worked for a daycare called Elite Academy. I worked in the before school program with kids from the ages of three to nine. Over the course of working my ten hours, I was able to get to know the kids pretty well. One boy in particular seemed to have a difficult time with handling his anger and emotions towards other children. We’ll call him Jason for the sake of this assignment. Jason is about four years old and is in pre-k. Since I noticed that he was having some behavioral problems I decided to use a concept from the theory of operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is all about trying to strengthen a desired behavior or weaken an undesirable behavior. You can use either punishment or reinforcement to achieve these goals. Punishment is used when you are trying to diminish or weaken the behavior. There are two different forms of it, positive and negative. For instance, Jason was playing with a bucket of cars one day and a friend tried playing with him. Kristen Hurst Professor Swain Psychology 101 29 October 2016 Little Albert & Conditioned Emotions In the early 1900s, classical conditioning, inspired by Ivan Pavlov, had become quite a topic. John B. Watson noted this theory, and wondered if it was possible to classically condition human beings. Watson chose to classically condition a healthy infant, who almost never cried, so that the child would not have witnessed any negative experience prior to this study. Because Albert never cried, it was decided that Watson would classically condition him to emote fear.…

Determining the function of the behavior is essential prior to punishment, unless the behavior is extremely dangerous, and punishment is needed immediately. Behavior analysts should only use punishment procedures if the behavior is extremely dangerous and no alternative intervention is successful at reducing the behavior. Behavior analysts should attempt to implement reinforcement contingencies prior to implementing punishment contingencies if possible, because punishment can have negative side effects. Behavior analysts should implement punishment only when everything else fails. In the event that punishment is necessary, behavior analysts should deliver reinforcement for alternative behaviors to reduce the possible side effects of punishment.…

If the individual fails to meet his/her expectations they may react in anger or frustration (Agnew, 1992). The individual’s anger or frustration adds to the will to achieve their expectation and may result in criminality in order to achieve their goal. 3.”There is a disjunction between just/fair outcomes and actual outcomes” (Agnew 1992 page 53). If an individual puts in effort towards a goal and the reward is worth less than the amount of effort put in, than an individual may feel cheated. The results may include criminal/delinquent behavior in order to receive an equal reward to compensate for the initial lower reward.…

Juno’s case deals with a myriad of issues of early abandonment, low human interaction, racism, bullying, and even linguistic problems. However, as focusing on the past are not the salient points for behavioral approach, our goal here is to teach Juno to eliminate unwanted behaviors and learn new behaviors that most possibly can overcome his social anxiety disorder. In Operant Conditioning some factual points that stood out to me were two-forms of positive and negative reinforcement and punishment. With the use of positive and negative reinforcement to increase or decrease a behavior could be rewarding in molding behaviors in most cases. With the use of operant conditioning, this could also be a great tool to use outside of the classroom. (Positive reinforcement) If a Childs (Behavior) is good during class (Consequence) a parent could praise them on it and treat them out, etc., for such good behavior at school and then (future behavior) the child would continue their progress of behaving in class.…

If you reward a child after they have done something wrong, chances are they’ll do it again. If you punish a child when they have behaved badly more than likely they will not act that way again. When a child has been good or has achieved something, you should complement them, let them know that you are proud of them and what they have done. Operant conditioning is important to know while trying to expert in child psychology, because you will be able to tell if a child has been built up or torn down. If you can tell a child has been built up to the point they are a spoiled brat and do not listen, then you will know that to correct these behavior you will have to start disciplining the child.…

Operant conditioning can be used in behaviour modification, stopping addiction, language acquisition and in many other areas through reinforcement or punishment. Punishment is used to stop bad behaviours while reinforcement stops the bad behaviour and teaches what to do instead. A good example of the application of operant conditioning is a speeding driver. If he gets a ticket on that particular day, chances are, he will not over speed in future. The ticket is the punisher that puts the behaviour of over speeding to an end.…
