Central to Watson’s theory is the concept of caring. She examines with clarity the roles that compassion and altruism play in the phenomena that occur in nursing. Watson’s theory of nursing, the theory of human caring, is composed of ten principle ideas know as Watson’s ten carative factors. The carative factors reflect the view held by Watson that nursing is a unique discipline that is simultaneously a science and an art. The first three carative factors are the philosophy that explains the science of nursing.
