Pedagogy Of Freedom Analysis

Freire introduces several key themes that combine to create the basis of his educational theory in his book Pedagogy of Freedom: Ethics, Democracy, and Civic Courage. Personally, I think that his theory displays an innovative way of looking at education and I agree with the arguments he presents. However, I believe that many of the cases he makes are idealized, and in practical application may be more complicated than he makes it seem. In an ideal education system this theory of freedom and innovation would reign dominant, however in the reality of education today, I think that there are certain structures in place that push back against Freire’s theory. One of the central themes in Freire’s writing revolves around the idea that the relationship between a student and a teacher is circular. “Whoever teaches learns in the act of teaching, and whoever learns teaches in the act of learning.” (Freire, 31). This means that the teacher’s role in a classroom isn’t just to impart wisdom upon a passive student, but also, through interaction, to be educated by the student and, through the process of educating, learn something themselves. However, many components of the theory are glorified versions created for an idealized education system. Freire’s educational policy emphasizes the ethics in education, the knowledge that all people are unfinished and educable throughout their lives, and the role and importance of democracy within education. These principals are all important for how education is carried out within the education system and I think that if education continues to evolve, we may improve on some of the flaws in the existing models of education and create a new model in which these idealized theories can be fully
