The theory of evolution was first formulated by Charles Darwin in the year of 1859. It is the theory that explains the process of natural selection and how species have changed over time and have had heritable physical and behavioural changes. Creationism is the belief that the universe and everything in it came from a higher being. There is no scientific evidence backing up the theory of creationism although it has a large following. Intelligent Design is another view that is similar to the idea of creationism yet not identical. Intelligent Design holds the belief that the cells and species are far too complex and intricate to have evolved and must have been designed by a higher intelligent being, thus being called intelligent design.

Evolutionism, unlike Creationism and Intelligent Design, is supported by scientific evidence and is one of the most substantial theories in the history of science. In 1859 Charles Darwin published his book The Origin of Species explaining his theory of Evolution and natural selection. Darwin did not have any knowledge on genetics and how the genetic structure of species changed but he did notice the pattern of change. As time went on further research and findings of fossilization continued to prove Darwin’s theory. This did not stop his theory garnering large amounts of controversy due to the overwhelming amount of evidence that rejected most theories of creation. The controversies that Darwin’s theory of Evolution faced were almost entirely social controversies as science did not deal with religious theories such as Creationism and Intelligent Design. A vestigial structure is an organ that has lost purpose in that current form of an organism but may have been useful in previous forms of said organism. Some vestigial structures in humans include the appendix, the coccyx, the arrector pili and the pilca luminaris. The appendix serves no function as of now to the human species but according to Charles Darwin it was once used by primates to digest leaves. The appendix gathers deposits of bacteria from the colon and in some cases these bacteria can cause a life threatening disease called appendicitis, which if left untreated can cause death. The coccyx, or more commonly known as the tail bone, is the bone which is leftover structure from primates who had tails. When looking at the human embryo a tail is visible and rarely a baby is born with a tail that usually gets surgically removed. Arrector pili, also known as goosebumps, is a muscle at the bottom of each hair follicle that responds to adrenaline by making each hair stand up. Although it has no use in humans today, arrector pili would have been useful for thermoregulation in species that have a lot of
