Human development is complex in nature and cannot be explained simply from a single perspective. The concept of nature vs. nurture is a debate among theorists in the field of developmental psychology suggesting the importance of biological predispositions (nature) and environmental influences (nurture) as contributing factors of human development. The theory of continuity vs. discontinuity is another argument among developmental theorist regarding whether human development is quantitative (changes in degrees of amount) and continuous, or qualitative (changes that make people different from what they were before) and discontinuous, (Shaffer & Kipp, 2010). The concept of stability vs. change is another debate between theorists related to whether certain human features change or remain stable through some stages of life, (Fujita & Diener, 2005).

discontinuity: In these regards it can be said that development is contingent to exposure of knowledge and experiences. For instance, young children learn and gain knowledge of concepts initially by what parents teach them and by experiences they are exposed to. An example of this is son; at age 7, he already reads and do mathematical problem at a third grade level, and have acquired extensive vocabulary. The quantity and quality of educational material being exposed, at home and school, is greater than other children of his age. This has made his cognitive development advanced quickly. Nevertheless, intellectual development of an individual may be discontinued for different reasons: traumatic brain injuries, diseases, and/or lack of educational experiences. An example this is the case of Genie Wiley. Genie was a girl who was deprived of having relationships with other people even her own family by order of her father. Since birth Genie was confined to live in a room having only human contact to be fed. By the time she was rescued, 13 years of e, she did not know how to talk or comprehend
