The re-conceptualized theory mainly deals with individuals experiencing chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Therefore, the theory addresses the process of visualizing a new way of life by creating new ways of existence in the world, developing new life objectives, and new levels of self-organization (Bailey & Stewart, 2014, p. 559). The theory helps explain the stressors associated with the diagnosis and treatment of major illnesses or chronic conditions, the processes by which individuals assess and respond to the uncertainty inherent in an illness experience, and the importance of professional caregivers in providing information and supporting individuals in understanding and managing uncertainty.
