In the strain theories relational strain and depressed mood were related to whether maltreated adolescents though about suicide. Status strain and maltreatment strain were not directly related to suicidal thoughts or indirectly related to suicidal thoughts through depressed mood or substance use. In my opinion, further research needs to be done to detect a relationship among these variables or if a relationship cannot be detected figure out why depression and substance use is not related to suicide in adolescents, because personally depression and substance abuse is highly related. There was also not a relationship between severe maltreatment and suicidal thoughts. Before concluding that the child maltreatment experience does not account for variability in suicidal thoughts among maltreated adolescents, it would be important for future researcher to test whether the duration of the maltreatment and the frequency of the maltreatment are related to whether maltreated adolescents think about suicide. In my opinion for status strain, researchers need to study one large group of depressed adolescents against another large group who are not depressed, but academically failing. Why I say this is because depression is not always related to academics, but could relate to an adolescent being a perfectionist and even if they are receiving all A’s if the A is …show more content…
Future research needs to be done to see if an adolescent sees their life as being a person who goes in and out of the system or someone who would like to change their lifestyle, and to compare the suicide rates to adolescents who believe jail will be their whole life and those who do not believe that. In the future, other intervention strategies and settings may emerge as promising, such as interventions aimed at modifying adolescent norms for behavior through social media networks or the provide option-rich alternatives that can be adapted to address individual’s needs, for example, individuals choose modules to suit specific emotional, behavioral, or life-context needs. Lastly, in my opinion adolescent suicide is not talked about as much as it should because people do not take them seriously when they threaten to kill themselves, until it is too late. My thought for that is to mandate suicide presentations or even classes to be taught in all schools (elementary, middle, and high school), through-out the United States. Presentations could be done in elementary schools, and mandatory suicide classes could be taught in the middle, and high schools. Even if this idea does not drop the adolescent suicide rate, but does save just one life, then it was all worth it in the
