“It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.” Ralph Waldo Emerson was a great transcendentalist who shared many of his beliefs in his writings. Transcendentalism is the philosophy that promotes the understanding that there is goodness in nature and in people, and it is supported in various ways today. Many current movies, songs, books, and TV shows endorse transcendentalism. Although many do not even know what this philosophy is, they learn about it every day through media.

A good example of this is found in the book Into The Wild by, Jon Krakauer. Into the Wild is about a young man who leaves all his posessions behind and goes to seek freedom in nature. In the transcendentalist way, he rejects society and is a non-conformist. In the book he says "I will miss you too, but you are wrong if you think that the joy of life comes principally from the joy of human relationships. God's place is all around us, it is in everything and in anything we can experience. People just need to change the way they look at things". A specific show that expresses transcendentalism is One Tree Hill. One Tree Hill is about a teenage boy in high school who has to choose who he wants to be and whether to choose right or wrong in the decisions that he and his friends make. One particular episode, he is told by the doctor that if he gets hurt again he could get paralyzed and end his future of playing sports in college and professional sports. To make that decision he goes to a court in the middle of nature because he feels that nature enlightens him and is the perfect place to go to think and make the right decisions in life. He relies on nature to help him think which is found in Emerson’s quote, “but if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars.
