Sergeant Trotter Play Analysis

This play is not only a drama, but a mystery too. The play is meaningful to the audience in a social manner. It gives an idea of the nature of revenge resulted from injustice and shows a real picture of the society. The main theme in this play is illusion versus reality. Illusion shows the wrong guesses of murderer and fake and hidden personalities, while reality reveals the truth and the secrets of the play. I have watched this show at Long Beach Play House and also on you tube several times to understand the theme and the core message of this play. After assessing all, I have planned to play the role of Sergeant Trotter. My role theme is basically based on the revenge and murder mystery. I think the role of Trotter is the most challenging one. Trotter is present in the guest house to investigate an ongoing murder case. He is the person, who seems to be in command over the all other characters. To reach the core of the acting, I am trying to focus on the inner aspects of Stanislavski theory. I researched the various artists who already played the same role in this play and studied their physical and emotional acting, expressions and overall act.
Objectives in Creating Character
In order to perform the role of Srgt Trotter, I studied the various themes and motives which are as follows;
 Mannerisms
 Feelings
 Inner Truth

I would try to make the character of Srgt trotter more realistic in nature by the ‘inner truth’ and perfect use of the voice and body. The mantra of ‘inner truth’ would help me to create the appearance of reality or ‘truth’ on stage. Here the ‘given circumstances’ are very challenging for my role, as the total set of environmental and situational conditions are based on the suspense plot, which influence the actions that a character in a drama undertakes. In order to achieve a more genuine performance, I will try to inhabit authentic emotion while on stage.
