Charlie Gordon's Characterization In Daniel Keyes Flowers For Algernon

Many people believe that scientifically changing a human being isn’t the right thing to do, but if they know the risks, it ends up being their decision. In the short story “Flowers for Algernon” written by Daniel Keyes, the main character, known as Charlie Gordon, struggled with a mental disability at the age 37. Charlie had to go through a series of tests to decide whether or not he would be qualified for an operation that supposedly would help him with his mental state, this operation would also help Charlie with his intelligence. Charlie ended up qualifying for the surgery, and proceeded to do the operation. There are many reasons why it is good Charlie did the operation, first, Charlie used to lack the ability to see certain features in a human, for example how pretty something or someone is. After Charlie had the surgery, symptoms of depression began to appear. He also began to push the people he loved and cared about away, he became a different person, “I want to be left to myself. I have become touchy and irritable. I feel the darkness closing in. It’s hard to throw off thoughts of suicide” (Keyes 23) This quote shows how Charlie has become unmotivated, depressed, and closed off. Before the surgery Charlie was happier then he is now. For example, Charlie loved Miss. Kinnian and now he is trying to shut her out. When Charlie started to mention thoughts of “suicide” that is when it became serious. Suicide is never right, and when someone is having thoughts about self-harm, they need help. This moment suggests that even though Charlie became intelligent and began to recognize emotions some may still argue that it was not ideal to have done the operation because he still become unmotivated and
