"Lord Of The Flies"
Fear is a major deciding factor in our life. Fear can range from running for your life to a smaller fear of acceptance, yet without fear, we are less than if not equal to an animal. In the novel "Lord Of The Flies", author William Golding presents the fear of the unknown to be a powerful force in a man's mind. Fear of the unknown is a powerful force, that can cause either hysteria or in some cases insight "'Maybe there is a beast....maybe it's only us.'" (Goldman 80). Throughout the novel, fear is seen routinely as practically all the boy decisions are made out of a form of fear. As the main protagonists struggle to survive on the island their immaturity proves a challenge. The novel "Lord Of The Flies" engages the reader in a roller coaster ride of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’ as the boys try to make their way on this island.
The main protagonists in the novel must be Ralph and Jack. They are polar opposites and each represent how extreme reactions to fear are. The author portrays fears effect on individuals when fear distorts our reality such as when Sam and eric's terror at spotting the dead paratrooper magnifies their experience from merely seeing movement and hearing the parachute to being actively chased down the mountain as they fled. When the other boys hear Samneric's tale, “‘There were eyes… teeth… claws...’”(Goldman 109), the group dynamic of fear comes into play. The boys do not come together to overcome this fearful situation but allow their own worst impulses to surface and dominate, fragmenting like glass into opposing groups and killing one of their own like animals in a frenzy of fear and
