This relates to another novel that I read, Matched by Ally Condie. In this novel, people live in a society where the government controls everything, when teens are 17 they are matched, and are given a life partner. They get married at the age of 21 and spend their whole life with that person. The theme of conformity is shown in both novels, even in the novel Matched people are blindly following the government and even though they don’t like their life partner they still spend their life with that person. The difference is that in Uglies the government changes people physically and mentally and in Matched the government chooses people’s life partner and doesn’t do anything with them mentally or physically. Another difference is that in the novel Matched Cassia’s parents are supporting her whereas in Uglies, Tally is being told not do the surgery by Maddy and Az so she is not being supported. In both situations they do not want the surgery/being matched but in the end they do agree to it. Another similarity is that Cassia falls in love with Ky, but she is getting married to Xander and Tally’s friend is Peris but falls in love with David. The other theme present in both novels is revolution begins with rebellion, in Matched it is shown when she doesn’t want to marry Xander because she fell in love with Ky so she rebels that the government shouldn’t do this and in Uglies it’s shown when Tally finds out that the surgery alters the brain so she rebels. In the novel, Tally was going to the Smoke because she needed to inform Dr. Cable and get the people at the Smoke arrested and instead she liked it there and never informed Dr. Cable. This reminds me of when I was going on a family trip to Germany and I thought I was going to hate it there, instead I loved it and wanted to stay longer just like Tally wanted to stay longer and not tell
