Throughout the beginning of the story it is clear that Oakley is not over her brother’s death. In the book Oakley says, “I know I’m supposed to feel something. Anything. Relief that Lucas is out of pain. Anger that her was taken so early from us. Sadness that I’ll never hear his laugh again or see his smiling face again.

Carson is the person who fills that hole in herself. He helps her get over Lucas’s death, along with this journel that Lucas left for Oakley to read. One of the entries that Lucas wrote proves that the lesson is that moving on is hard, but it’s necessary to start over. The entry reads, “I’ve decided to do something for you. If you’re reading this, I’m already gone. I knew you’d have a hard time with me dying. Probably more than anyone. Don’t lie and say you’re fine. I know you better than that.” In a later entry he says, “Live your life. Go after your dreams. Don’t have any regrets. And most of all, be happy.” When he says that in his entry he wants Oakley to move on, to live her life like she used to and not to dwell in the past and to focus on what’s going on now. At the end of the book, Carson gets his leg bitten off by a shark and once again Oakley enters into a state of despair. Another person who she loves is in a near death situation. Next to Carson when he’s in a coma Oakley says, “I’ll be back tomorrow, I promise. I feel the twitch in his hand. Just a small one. My heart speeds up and I look down to see his hand slowly wrap around mine.” Her heart speeds up when he has a reaction to what she said. She loves Carson and when he wrapped his hand around hers she was excited based on the fact that her heart speeds up when he wraps his hand around
