In the story, Delia is so calm around all the violence and mistreatment she goes through on a daily basis. “She had brought love to the union and he had brought a longing after the flesh. Two months after the wedding, he had given her the first brutal beating”( Hurston 2). This quote represents that her magical matrimony only lasted for two months, and then turned into her worst nightmare. The author showed how Delia reached her state of freedom by incorporating the sun rising at the end of the story. As said before Delia came into her marriage wanting a happy ending, but she received nothing but a dreadful husband that didn't care about anything but himself. Seeing that her marriage took a sharp turn in the wrong direction, Delia didn't leave after the first time she was violently beat up by Syke. As a result Delia had to suffer through fifteen years of verbal and physical abuse until a miracle fell upon her life. The death of Skye shown through the image of the rising sun also demonstrates how Delia was finally free from her worst
