Trust is an important bond that all humans should have with another, but what happens when the trust is broken? Trust is a significant theme in The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night-Time, a novel by Mark Haddon about a boy whose father broke his trust twice. In the novel, many characters have had they trust broken or broke their trust with others. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon shows readers that trust can be easily lost. The theme of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon is that trust is hard to earn back after it is lost as seen through Christopher's dads struggle to regain his sons trust after lying to him about his mother and when Christopher's dad lied about killing Wellington. …show more content…
After Christopher got sick all over his bed because he found out that his mother was alive is when his father told him that he had killed Wellington. Ed Boone (Christopher's father) says, “I killed Wellington, Christopher”(124). Christopher was confused and thought that his dad was lying to him. Christopher was very surprised that his dad killed Wellington. He was also scared because he thought that since his dad killed Wellington was capable to kill him, so he got sick all over his bed.Another example of Christopher's realization of trust being difficult to get back happens later in the same conversation with his father. Mr.Boone says, ““I’m sorry, Christopher. I promise you, I never meant for it to turn out like this.” And then I knew that it wasn’t a joke and I was really frightened.”(125). At this point, Christopher figured out that his dad wasn't joking about killing Wellington. Christopher was really frightened by this news, as it states in the quote. He was scared to trust his father because he lied to him about Wellington. Christopher was very sad when Wellington died because Christopher loves dogs.In short, Christopher was very reluctent to forgive his father but he eventally
