A very common theme throughout The Perks of being a Wallflower is the theme of loving someone you can’t have. This theme is weaved throughout the main character’s thoughts constantly as the story progresses. In the song I Want The One I Can't, the singer explained how loving someone you cannot have can affect you. According to the Lyrics, “I want the one I can't have. And it's driving me mad. It's written all over my face.” These lines exemplify the common effects this can have on an individual. It is evident that this love is causing him to go mad; meaning that he feels rage for not getting something he wants. We’ll do this with two words. Slow and fading. The opening shot will begin with a blank canvas, the title Perks of Being a Wallflower appears letter by letter through the motions of a typewriter, alluding to Charlie and his signature equipment. Charlie’s words play over with his genuinely dark quote, “there is so much pain, I don’t know how to not notice it...” There is no music, so we may be able to detect and place an emphasis on the slight tremors and desolation in his voice.…

Layers of Fiction Symbolism is represented by levels of pragmatic and figurative meaning. As an example, in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Gilman incorporates the very wallpaper to represent this idea. The wallpaper displays more than just symbolism; it also shows the time period and theme of the story. These elements of fiction are also supported by the first person narration in helping the reader understand and analyze the text. This combination helps to show the relationships of the protagonist, overall setting, and theme of the story.…

The novel was written in a journalistic style presenting each chapter as a letter or entry that Charlie has written about the events after they happen. The movie has very little voice-over narrative of said letters used more of a transition from one point in time to another in the story. It is because of the novels style that makes the movie the better presenter that the main theme in The Perks of Being a Wallflower is abuse. The movie does the better job in a variety of events/scenes including the scenes in which Charlie witnesses his sister Candace being hit by her boyfriend, Charlie’s flashbacks on his Aunt Helen, and the collective of scenes that eventually lead to the audience and Charlie learning that he had experienced his own form of abuse as a…
